Do you work at a hotel, event center or other sizable venue in central Indiana? Are you interested in reducing the amount of food waste discarded by your venue? The Indiana Recycling Coalition is piloting a commercial food waste composting program in Indianapolis, and they’re looking for businesses and institutions to participate!
Why compost food waste?
- According to food waste reduction organization ReFED, “American consumers, businesses, and farms spend $218 billion a year…growing, processing, transporting, and disposing food that is never eaten. 52 million tons of food [are] sent to landfill annually.”
- Composting saves landfill space, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and produces a valuable material to improve soil health.
- Evaluating your food waste can lead to cost savings and reduced waste volume overall.
- Building Indiana’s composting infrastructure will support and expand green jobs.
The IRC is providing training, supplies and cost abatement to help participating organizations get started with compost collection. To learn more about the program, check out the IRC website or contact program coordinator Julie L. Rhodes at julielrhodesconsulting@gmail.com.
The program relies on grant funding that must be spent within one year, so don’t wait to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to go green!
