New! Indianapolis Event Waste Guide

This project is near and dear to me — I’ve been working to reduce event waste in central Indiana for close to ten years, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to publish a resource that compiles everything you need to know about reducing event waste in Indy, all in one place.

The Indianapolis Event Waste Guide launched in June of this year and includes two components:

  1. A detailed-yet-approachable Best Practices guide to successfully reducing, reusing, and recycling in central Indiana
  2. A comprehensive Resources Directory that lists all of the vendors and community organizations that can support your goal of a low-waste event.

This document is essentially my brain in PDF format!

Even if you’re not planning any upcoming events in Indy, I still highly recommend checking it out, as many of the Best Practices are transferable to other destinations. (And who knows, maybe Indy will start to look like the home of your next green event!)

Still pretty new! Event sustainability criteria from Global Sustainable Tourism Council

Over the last year and a half, I was privileged to be part of a three-person team that authored the new MICE Criteria from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The criteria officially launched to the public in March, so this announcement is way overdue, but better late than never!

What are these criteria all about?

GSTC develops global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism. The organization previously developed criteria for hotels, tour operators, and destinations, and the new MICE Criteria bring events into the fold with targeted standards designed for Event Organizers, Venues, and Events/Exhibitions.

The criteria cover four pillars for holistic sustainable event design:

  • Sustainable management
  • Socioeconomic impacts
  • Cultural impacts
  • Environmental impacts

How can I use the MICE Criteria?

The formal certification process for the MICE Criteria is still in the works. The best way to get started with these standards is to download them and conduct a self-evaluation. What actions are you already taking? Which seem like the logical next steps for your program?

Important note: These criteria were intentionally designed to reflect the highest standards that event professionals should aspire to. So don’t be discouraged if you’re not doing a lot of these things yet! Our goal was to paint a picture of the ideal future, as well as provide concrete examples of steps event professionals can take to get there.
